Scene 1: Loss > Win
Time: 10:00am
Place: Random trash hotel in Canada
It was on May 5th at one in the morning. This day was in the mind of one Roderick Kross since he was first signed to Alberta Wrestling Federation. It was a first round match against Sasha Foote and to Roderick’s amazement, he lost. After that match ended and the show went off the air Roderick had returned to his hotel room and started tossing things around. This was the first time in his professional career that he suffered defeat. Was the messages he was hearing in his mind lying to him? He knew the path was a little cloudy but he figured it was clear enough to secure victory. Sadly, he thought wrong. Roderick calmed down before he laid down to get some rest.
-Hours later-
Roderick awakened the following morning to someone knocking on his hotel room door. He sat up and said to himself “What now!” He got off the bed and walked towards the door and when he opened it he saw his mentor/teacher Chris Spade at his door. He leaned against the door frame looking at him and gave a cocky response.
“The Dublin Messiah” Roderick Kross: What do you want Spade? Don’t you see I’m not all well upstairs.
Chris Spade: Well I already knew that but that besides the point. You asked me to mentor you and coach you right? Well that’s why I am here, because I saw what happened. Now, you need some advice and a lesson and I don’t care if you are ready to talk about it or not. I’m here and my time is valuable. So go and have a seat.
Without an invite Chris pushes his way into the room and sits in the chair by the small table all hotels seem to always have. Chris sits down.
Roderick sighed to himself and closed the door before he slowly walked towards him. He hasn’t seen Spade in weeks. He went on to pull a chair up in front of Spade and sat down. They both looked at each other as Roderick went on to say.
“The Dublin Messiah” Roderick Kross: So what are you here for exactly?
Spade looks at him kind of with a serious tone. He rubs his hand through his goatee.
Chris Spade: Look, I get that your not so happen about how things went down on your debut. Well, while it is fresh in your mind, some things are worth talking about right away. My advice is that you have to understand that shit happens. While we would all love to win our first matches and have this big old undefeated streak, that just doesn’t happen. That’s just fantasy that all young wrestlers think is how it all works. Some luck out and get that but most don’t but the trick is knowing how to bounce back. I’ve seen hundreds who all had that same attitude and they lose and what do they do? They tuck tail and run. They quit and go to the next company and do it all over again. Until nobody wants them and they don’t amount to jack shit. I’m here to make sure you don’t run and hide but instead, use it as fuel. Make sure you learn from the mistakes and you bounce back. Trust me I've been there and I know. Hell, I likely took a bigger ass kicking. You get what I am going with this?
Spade looks at Roderick with almost a dead stare to see if he was getting it or not.
“The Dublin Messiah” Roderick Kross: Honestly I do get what you’re saying, it's just how I bounce back losing to someone like Sasha Foote. I threw everything at her along with the kitchen sink and it just wasn’t enough. I didn’t expect her to be that strong, that powerful. I was in her head, I knew I was but she is just…...I don’t know. Now besides losing to someone like her, I have an even bigger challenge in front of me with the new HKW Dynasty champion in Brookford.
Roderick looked down in disappointment. This loss really shook Roderick to his core. Was he really questioning his own moral code and message he’s been preaching for weeks now? He couldn’t have. His belief just wasn’t allowing him to judge anything even himself.
“The Dublin Messiah” Roderick Kross: I had a chance to become the first thing of a brand new company. How can I honestly take this loss and turn it into motivation towards a man who just became a champion in one of the most respectable companies around today. I know I can take him but me defeating him is really questioning my drive right now.
Chris listens to everything he is saying. He thinks for a moment as a lot of what he said, reminded of his first matches in the UWF where he is known from. Chris looks and says.
Chris Spade: Look, there is nothing wrong with having all the confidence and believe that you can take on anybody in this business. Starting back with Sasha, the first thing that stands out with what you said, was your first mistake. Never and I mean never regardless of who the person is or how you feel about said person, never underestimate anybody. The old saying expect the unexpected. Even if you believe you were in her head and believe you had her number. You didn’t expect her to be that strong right, well next time you know and be ready for to be even stronger. Trust me, when I started the company I’m known for, I did the same thing. I thought I knew everything and had it all in the bag. Guess what? He kicked my ass, and he didn’t think I would stuck around and quit like all those other punk kids. What I do? I learned from it, I didn’t take nothing for granted and down the line we meant again and you know what happened? I won. For years after we went back and forth. He won some, I won some. Hell became one of my greatest rivalries in this business.
Chris Spade pauses for a moment, just enough to let that soak in for a moment.
Chris Spade: So looking forward at Brookford, You know what he is about and that he is damn good. So, while having the confidence that you can beat him. No doubt you can, it is a matter of will you. Now how does that become reality? You have worked your ass off and that means keep doing whatever you can to keep improving your in ring abilities, that's one thing to this day, I do. I’m inside of that ring trying to do whatever I can to gain an upper hand. From a new move, or just whatever way I felt, make me just a little more unpredictable. See a lot of people have in ring habits that they like to do moves in the same order and people who wrestled or seen you enough times catch on. So what is the best way to stop that? Try and make it where they can’t catch on. That small detail can be the difference from winning or losing a match.
“The Dublin Messiah” Roderick Kross: I know one thing, this is going to be the biggest match of my career. The fans, my children are voting on the match stipulation for this match against Brookford. If they know what's best for me, they would choose a submission match. I would love to get a chance to make another person tap out but then again, he isn’t the type of guy that’ll go down without a fight. He is stronger and twice my size but maybe I can use that to my advantage. He also seems to have a very short temper. I know you must have experienced men like this but maybe this is a good thing. You know this talk is exactly what I needed. I’ve experienced failure before in my life but it’s been so long since it has entered my soul. This feeling has almost consumed me many times over and even now it almost drove me into insanity last night. Ever since I left home as a child, I’ve lived with so much regret and failure. I shall take everything you’ve said to heart. I know I made the right choice coming to you for guidance and aid.
Roderick looked over at Spade with a sense of clarity in his mind. This is exactly what he needed. Another voice to steer his thoughts towards the right direction. Build his vengeance and frustration towards something and that something is his next opponent Brookford.
Chris nods that he words get connected with him. He can see the fire burning in his eyes now and that is what he was looking to see. Fire and determination to bring to the next match.
Chris Spade: Yes, I have dealt with people of all sizes and mindsets. Look at me, I’m Six feet tall and Two Hundred and Thirty pounds. Most people did outweigh me and were tall. However that's where the brains come in, knowing how to take down a bigger man, and there is always a way to do that. Even if they tell you they can’t be stopped. That’s just talk, but knowing how to cut them down like a redwood. That’s where the edge came into play. You get that going, on their back they are all the same size.
Roderick nodded at Spade and both men stood up and laughed. They proceeded to spend the day discussing various topics as Roderick thought in the back of his mind “Phase two complete.”
