Have you guess’d you yourself would not continue?
Have you dreaded these earth-beetles?
Have you fear’d the future would be nothing to you?
Is to-day nothing? Is the beginningless past nothing?
If the future is nothing, they are just as surely nothing.
Standing against a wall outside a shop in Yokohama, is a young man wearing a leather jacket and looking as out of place as one can look. His head hangs low, his eyes gazed on a trail of water running through his feet and into the street in front of him. Neon lights illuminate the trail, even if it’s just lightly because of the distance. He takes a cigarette from his pocket and lights it up. Taking the first hit of the cigarette he lifts his head and looks at the distance in front of him; he knows he’s been filmed, so he smirks and takes another puff of the cigarette before turning around. The familiar face of Neal Durden appeared in full towards the camera as he simply exhaled the smoke from the inside and gave a smirk to the camera.
To think of time is to think about the impossibility of controlling everything in life. Where the water flows when it rains; when will the heart just simply… gives up and stops beating… when the mind goes blind and when it all begins again. Things that one simply has no power, no bearing in deciding. The fear of the future, the movement of worms and beetles over a desecrated corpse… the continuation of one’s journey thru life.
Neal smiles, realizing that he’s rambling and probably making as little sense as anyone could imagine. He stops and takes a second to appreciate the street in front of him as he then turns his attention back towards the camera as he continues.
To think of time, then… is to think about all the possibilities; all the possible outcomes, of every single choice you have in life. One can choose to simply not get out of bed in the morning one day and it will have a different branch of outcomes. One can decide to get on a plane one morning and be in Japan to take to the ring and lay out a challenge… and that’ll have a whole new branch of outcomes. That’s why I’m here. That’s what you wanted to hear, wasn’t it?
A smirk drew on his face as he ushered the rhetorical question. He then took a deep puff of the cigarette; and as he exhaled he flicked the cigarette over towards the street and stepped on it.
I stood in the middle of that ring face to face with the Millennium Cloud Gate champion… I could feel the adrenaline and excitement rise up from the crowd. Hell, I could feel the excitement grow on Tiff Rollins. She knows what I’m capable of doing inside that ring; I know what she’s capable of doing inside that ring… we’ve shared a locker room before in Underground… but the excitement must have to wait for a bit…
A sigh of disappointment escaped Neal as he looked down to the floor and put both of his hands inside the pockets of his jacket and shrugged.
To think of time is to understand one cannot control everything. Now the question lingers… what would’ve happened. If just one blow was thrown, would it have opened branches of opportunity for me to end her lengthy reign just shy of the year mark? If we were let loose would it have changed anything at all? Would the small change of fortune affect anything at all? I don’t know and that’s precisely what time wants. It is a fickle concept, didn’t you know? So fickle in fact that just a mere second can decide a victor and a loser; life or death… a second that no one can control because it’ll come to pass even if you don’t want it to…
A light chuckle escaped Neal as he exhaled. He looked directly at the camera and continued talking.
Now we have to gear towards the unknown. Towards a new set of unexpected branches of opportunity, chances to grab victory by the neck and claim it as your own. A chance to prove oneself to the world. Many have asked why I answered Tiff’s challenge and that’s why. I didn’t shy away from it either. I wanted to prove myself against some of the best in the world… by myself. I know there’s little doubt on anyone’s mind I deserve recognition as one of the best tag-team wrestlers in the world today… but by myself… that’s a whole ‘nother question.
Neal didn’t miss the opportunity to lean back against the wall and look straight into the night sky here in Yokohama. For a moment he smiled an uncertain smile. Then he looked back towards the camera.
To think of time is to know, sometimes… you just have to walk.
Have you dreaded these earth-beetles?
Have you fear’d the future would be nothing to you?
Is to-day nothing? Is the beginningless past nothing?
If the future is nothing, they are just as surely nothing.
