We have a backstage exclusive where we’re in the trainer’s room a little after the show has gone off the air. On one seat there’s a doctor standing...well eye to eye with a seated Seth Iser and Kelsey looking at the situation slightly concerned. Just an occasional grunt as the cameraman gets in a little closer to spy on this.
Doctor:
Calm down, Mr. Iser.
Seth Iser:
I’m not yelling ye--gah!
Seth lets out a grunt as the poor doctor continues to drain the red mist out of his eyes and Seth literally digging his hands into the seat to resist the temptation to start pawing at his eyes. Every sound of agony appears to agitate Kelsey as she stands by, noticeably flinching each time. She's been silent so far, watching on with an inscrutable gaze.
Doctor:
Within a few hours the burning sensation will go aw---
Seth Iser:
I’ve been on both ends of this situation before, you don’t have to inform me what I already know!
Seth’s snappy response makes the doctor cringe for a moment. Kelsey starts tapping her foot and furling her eyebrows with her nervous Tourette's tic. Finally, she decides to speak.
Kelsey Spencer:
This is all my fault. I'm the reason this happened to you. You got hurt sticking up for me. If I'd have been able to handle Heath and his goons last week, you wouldn't have had to come to my rescue and you wouldn't be involved in this mess.
Seth Iser:
Don’t.
Seth’s words aren’t firey but more the stern words you’d expect from a father to a kid. Kelsey breaks her gaze and lowers her head.
Seth Iser:
Doctor. I’m clearly okay enough. Can I have a moment with my daughter alone?
The doctor looks at Seth a little odd not seeing the physical resemblance though nothing more needs to be said when Seth puts on that glare of his. It somehow looks even more intimidating with some of those burns around his eyes. That’s his cue to just step out for a moment.
Seth Iser:
Fuck’n doctors…
With a sigh. he mutters to himself for a moment before turning toward Kelsey doing his best to hide how bad his eyes are burning.
Seth Iser:
Don’t go down that rabbit hole. You’re too good for that. There’s how many of them and how many of you? I made that decision to intervene on your behalf alone. This was part of the consequences for that even though the short sighted bastard just proved me right.
Kelsey's eyes wandered the floor for a moment before she looked up at Seth. Even sitting on a chair, Seth’s tall and can fill a room.
Kelsey Spencer:
I know, but I can't help but feel guilty about what happened. It's hard knowing that the people I care about could get hurt and I'm powerless to stop it.
She lets out a grunt, followed by a hiss.
Kelsey Spencer:
Gah, I should've known he'd pull something like this! I should've made my way out there the second the match was called off!
Seth just finally gets to his feet and you can hear him take a deep breath and gritting his teeth for a moment from the burns going on in his eyes.
Seth Iser:
He overplayed his hand again, Kels. If there is a positive lining to what just happened out there, Heath just proved everything I’ve ever said about him correct. Just I didn’t think he’d become that...lazy. So lazy that he’d thought all he’d have to do as an ace in the hole is to use one of the things I’m known for against me. Have to use shortcuts not as a means to win a match but because that’s all he can do anymore because he’s lost the drive to really get in there and wrestle…
There’s a bitter sounding chuckle that escapes from Seth.
Seth Iser:
His goons and mist and the best he could manage from a match with this ‘old man’ was a draw and an angry post match attack when my words rang true and he knew I was right.
Kelsey raises a brow to him, as if to question is disposition.
Kelsey Spencer:
Aren't you mad that he tricked you like that and stole a great match from you?
The bitter chuckle that escaped is gone.
Seth Iser:
There was no great match to be had. Not with what Heath is. I knew he was going to do that. He failed a similar test that young Tiffany Rollins passed. But that pain that’s going through his shoulder when I pulled him down to the canvas. He’ll feel that as long as I’ll feel this mist and those stupid goons jumping me. If anything, this match was as much about taking a pound of his flesh for his transgressions as much as a test of his character. Right now he escaped knowing he had a match with me...while failing to disprove anything I said. And if this was just between him and I? The only thing to be angry about is not getting the winner’s pay. And the fact that his goons continue to prove to be just that. Goons.
And then you can kind of see different parts of Seth’s face going red and it isn’t from the burns. Kelsey appears slightly concerned, but attentive.
Seth Iser:
But I am angry for an entirely different reason. Two...really.
Kelsey Spencer:
Two? What are they?
Seth Iser:
One: Sometimes it sucks being right.
Seth says that in a low tone.
Seth Iser:
And two: him making all of these mistakes and using them to lash out at you. Because he can say whatever he wants about me, pontificate some sort of lie when the film has proved me right time and time again. Because to be blunt and honest, someone like you in this industry? You’re a rarity. Something to be admired from a young wrestler’s point of view. Something to be truly respected.
Kelsey lowers her chin as she wears a humble smile. She fidgets nervously with her fingers for a moment while staring at the ground beneath her feet.
Kelsey Spencer:
I really am sorry for all of this.
Her head slowly rises to look him in the bloodshot eyes.
Kelsey Spencer:
But I'm glad you've been here to have my back. Thanks for always being there and looking out for me.
And a smirk creeps onto Seth’s face.
Seth Iser:
If you really want to get him back...for someone in your position, it’s simple.
Seth muses for a moment knowing he’s got her full attention.
Seth Iser:
Just do what you’ve done from Australia to the States to China and everywhere else in between like you’ve done for the last decade in the sport. Go out there, adapt to what’s been done, make him even angrier than he’s already been, and beat his sorry ass in the middle of that ring. Then he can scream and yell all he wants...but he’d have to live with the fact that Kelsey Spencer has surpassed Heath Williams at this point of your respective careers and to be honest with both of us? I don’t think he can.
Kelsey smiles for a split second before her expression shifts to one of determination.
Kelsey Spencer:
You're right. I know exactly what I've got to do.
She marches out of the camera frame, presumably to leave the room. However, a few seconds later, she returns to the shot and latches onto Seth with a great big hug. No words, just a hearty embrace that may force a lesser man to tap out. Seth lets out a small cough but returns the hug briefly.
Seth Iser:
You break my ribs with the hug, Rebecca is going to kick both of our asses.
Kelsey wrinkles her nose and releases the hug, giving a warm smile.
Kelsey Spencer:
Now that I know you're okay, there's someone I've got to go and have a quick talk to…
Seth Iser:
I’m about as fine as someone could be given the circumstances. Eyes are going to burn like hell for a week or two but that’s life. Take care of your business, kiddo. And if some shit does go down, you know I have your back.
Seth gives as much of a warm returning smile as he can and with that, Kelsey turns on her heels and heads out the door, for real this time. The doctor then returns with a bunch of paperwork just as Kelsey leaves and Seth squints his eyes and grits his teeth more with that action.
Seth Iser:
Fuck’n doctors…
He mutters that a second time, the doctor goes back to draining his eyes and you hear him let out another grunt and everything goes to black.
