Bowie Kennedy:
Helena! Helena!
The tattooed woman stop on her tracks, turning around to the blonde interviewer running in her direction.
Bowie Kennedy:
You promised me an interview at Homecoming, remember?
It’s a well known fact that the last Liberty Champion isn’t particularly fond of interviews, and chances are she only said that, at the last pay-per-view to sneak away from Bowie’s questions. Which is probably what she was trying to do even now.
Helena Noir:
I did. Sorry Bowie, it slipped my mind.
She smiles at the interviewer.
Bowie Kennedy:
Awesome. So, let’s start from the beginning, shall we? Night one of Homecoming, your match against Chris Constantine.
Helena Noir:
I have no regrets, no complaints either. Sure, Chris may have bent some rules to get the win, but the truth is he didn’t steal anything.
Bowie looks a bit surprised, certainly they were expecting a different answer.
Helena Noir:
Constantine is very talented, nobody can take that away from him. All this cheating, the constant helps from his wife and associates.. He doesn’t need that. It’s a lazy and cheap way to win, a weak foundation to build your career on. Sure, it’s an highway to the top, the fastest track to get there, but two or three years from now, when you look back at your career… Would you be proud of what you did? Would you hold dear these memories or look at them in shame?
She pauses for a moment.
Helena Noir:
I reached a point in my career when I’m taking stock of everything I have done and accomplished in this business. I’m looking back to my early days in Montreal, the months with the Revenants, Victory, GOL, Liberty… I did things I’m not proud of, I made mistakes. I can’t change the past, but I’m not going to let it define my present, my legacy. I have one last chance to leave a mark in this industry, everything that I am earning from now on it’s going to be my own merit. No more shortcuts.
Bowie stares at their guest, for a long moment they don’t say a word.
Bowie Kennedy:
That’s very noble, especially in a cut-throat business like ours, with so many people willing to go to any lengths to get success, and get it now. I think it also answers what Joey Leclair said in his promo earlier tonight.
A light chuckle comes from Helena, but there’s no smile on her face.
Helena Noir:
Joey Leclair needs to understand that the Queen Of Pain is gone. I’m not the same person I was four years ago. He said that I set someone on fire, that’s not what really happened.
In this short pause on her speech, the more attentive eyes could notice the slightest change in her expression. It’s clear that this memory is still upsetting her.
Helena Noir:
It was my second defense of the MWA Titanium Championship, against a guy named Bartolomeo. Your typical bored rich kid who walked into this business for the thrill. I actually kind of hated him, he represented everything I was not, everything this life had always neglected me. See, Bowie, the title I was holding at the time was to be defended under hardcore rules. The match was brutal, one of the toughest I have ever been in. At some point, I set a table on fire on the outside. Not the first time i did that, I knew exactly what I was doing. I took my sweet time doing that, I entertained the fans, you know how these things go.. Then finally, I climbed on the apron, ready to get back in the ring and I see this motherfucker charging at me, full head of steam.
With little to no time to think, I just take a step aside. He couldn’t stop himself, he was already diving toward me and ending face first onto the table.
Bowie cringes, imagining the scene. Helena nods her head.
Helena Noir:
It was awful, half of his face looked like a burger… And yes, before you asked, I finished the match. I yelled, I begged the referee to call for the damn bell. But he never did. I did what I had to do.
She turns now to the camera.
Helena Noir:
I never set anyone on fire, Joey. It was an accident. I fought in extreme environments, and people got hurt. Shit, I might even ended a career or three. But never on purpose.
Sure, I played on it, I maybe even bragged about it. But don’t think for a second that I enjoyed, that I even wanted it.
That’s the difference between you and me.
Bowie Kennedy:
And what about the challenge he issued?
Helena Noir:
I have a tag team tournament to focus on.
She says with a shrug of her shoulders.
Helena Noir:
Leclair can wait.
Bowie brings the microphone to their lips to ask the next question, but Helena is already gone.
