Victoria Salinas sits in the bleachers of the main gym of what was the Seattle Wrestling Academy. The only thing remaining now is the very ring that she trained in. A part of her is certainly feeling some strong guilt over her decision to sell the school she once owned. While the school itself isn’t dead, it’s no longer in Seattle. It’s been relocated to Miami and while she knows she did the right thing for herself, a piece of her feels as if she had just cost so many young men and women their dreams… even if most of them were compensated and went with the school to South Beach.
She hears footsteps and the moment she turns to her right, she sees Darren Holliday walking toward her. He sits next to her and this guilt within her grows.
Victoria: I’m sorry…
Mr. Holliday: Sorry? For what?
Victoria: For selling what you built from the ground up. It wasn’t for the money…
Mr. Holliday: Victoria, you don’t have to explain that to me. I know it wasn’t for the money. You did the right thing… for the school and for yourself. The school will be infused with a bigger cash flow than ever. I know damn well you sold it to the right person in Myra Lynwood and ninety percent of the students remained and will be so much better off… as will you. I know how much the stress of running this place put a huge burden on your career. You have nothing to be sorry about.
Victoria: I’m still going to miss this place… this is where I started. I had no idea that when I came here 12 years ago that my life was going to change forever. I remember my shyness and lack of self-esteem annoyed you from time to time… but gosh, I was just this scared, shy little girl from Montana experiencing the world for the first time. I didn’t know what to expect.
Mr. Holliday: Vicky… you’ve progressed so much from the day that I met you…
At this point, the two begin to talk about that very day.
FLASHBACK
Date: May 18, 2007
A 19-year-old Victoria Salinas steps into the main gym of the Seattle Wrestling Academy, the same wrestling school that she would eventually buy and run herself though she obviously isn’t aware of this fact at all at this point.. She’s extremely skittish and shy as she takes a look around the building and finds the main ring right in the center of the room. She nervously puts down her stuff by the ring apron and gazes at the ring in front of her finding herself in awe of what she’s about to embark on.
Voice: May I help you?
Victoria is startled as she turns around and spots a British man, about 25 years older than her, standing in front of her.
Victoria: Um… I’m in the right place, right?
Man: And your name?
Victoria: Vic.. Victoria…
Man: Oh you’re in the right place… though you’re an hour early…
Victoria: Oh… sorry…
Victoria winces, clearly indicating the lack of self-esteem and confidence she would overcome later in her life.
Man: What in the bloody hell are you sorry for? It’s refreshing that someone has such initiative. Victoria… how about I teach you a quick lesson to think about: confidence is what drives success. I can sense that you’re very… tentative about this. Don’t be. For fuck’s sake, you’ve gotten this far so you must be doing something right.
Victoria: Who are you, again?
Man: Ah yes… sorry. I’m Shawn Riley and let me warn you… I don’t sugarcoat a bloody thing so I hope you shape up that confidence… otherwise this is going to be a LONG stay for you here. Best of luck and welcome! I’ll see you in an hour.
Shawn Riley takes his leave from the scene at this point as Victoria looks back at the ring. She walks up the steps and goes through the ropes. Her eyes indicate a huge pool of nervousness in her heart completely unaware of how the rest of her life was about to drastically change. There she is… fragile… scared… not knowing what she’s really getting herself into.
Voice: Interesting… a new student is never this early.
Victoria looks and sees Darren Holliday, then the owner and head trainer of the school. Darren of course, has no idea that he’d meet the most successful student he will ever have. He steps in the ring with Victoria who of course, is nervous.
Mr. Holliday: And you are?
Victoria: Victoria…
Mr. Holliday: Ah..., the Montana girl I heard about. I’m Darren Holliday...the owner of this place.
He extends his hand leading Victoria to slightly wince.
Mr. Holliday: Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you.
Victoria hesitates before shaking his hand.
Mr. Holliday: Rough upbringing?
Victoria: How did you know?
Mr. Holliday: It’s an easy tell when someone your age is so nervous.
Victoria: Rough upbringing is an understatement, Mr. Holliday. Try living just above poverty your whole life, raised by just your mother… someone you thought was your dad denying you constantly, putting you through a lot of emotional turmoil and then you figure out that he really wasn’t your dad and that you still have never met him… oh and that’s without mentioning a childhood with very few friends, being bullied in middle and high school daily and having to grind your way here by working at a cheap diner, never spending a penny and saving up all that money for so long to come all the way here… no friends, no family… and risking everything knowing that if I fail… it’s a LONG way back to Montana… yeah… ROUGH UPBRINGING!
Victoria takes a deep breath before instantly regretting that outburst.
Victoria: Sorry… I couldn’t help myself.
Tears begin to form in her eyes.
Victoria: I’m just… scared. What if I fail? I REALLY want to do this… I’ll do ANYTHING it takes for this to work. It’s just… I’ve put all my money and all my faith into this and if this fails… I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life…
The tears fall down her face.
Victoria: I don’t want to go back with nothing… but I’m so scared that I will!
Mr. Holliday: Victoria… listen… don’t be scared, alright? If you truly want this bad enough… and the vibe I get from you is that you do… then you’re not going to fail. Also… you’ve overcome everything you’ve just described to me to get THIS far? Young lady, give yourself more credit. I understand you’ve been through a lot… but you’re so much stronger than you think. I know this isn’t going to be easy… but you’re a strong young lady and by the time you graduate from here, you’re going to see that.
He wipes away her tears to further comfort the then-timid 19-year-old.
Mr. Holliday: Trust me, you’ll be alright.
Victoria nods.
Victoria: Thank you…
Mr. Holliday: Your first test is shortly… and please… try not to take any criticism from Shawn too personally. He’s going to be rough, I’ll tell you that….
In her present day mind… Victoria remembers the ups and downs of the first few months of her training… starting that first day…
Mr. Riley: That…
Victoria watches a fellow student wrestle an audition match against Shawn Riley himself.
Mr. Riley: ...was BLOODY HORRID! Look, I know you have no experience… well none of you do… but you’re wrestling as if you’re on a fucking trampoline you donkey! It’s a completely different thing here than the fucking shit you do in the backyard. Lord, you’re hopeless. Alright… Victoria, come here…
Now she’s really nervous as she approaches him.
Mr. Riley: This is the very first time you’re ever going to experience a wrestling match, you know that right?
She nods.
Mr. Riley: In three minutes, you’re going to wrestle against me and you’re going to show me what you have. I’m not expecting a bloody five star match, this is just to gauge your natural instincts and ability. Though… considering our encounter an hour ago and how nervous you were… I’m not expecting much out of you.
Victoria: Excuse me?
Mr. Riley: Yeah, you heard me, coffee server! I’m not impressed by how you got here. I don’t even know how the hell you were able to pull off what you did back at that diner. With how shy you were, you couldn’t have possibly been a good waitress… so either people in Montana have low standards… or maybe you had another source of income… if you know what I mean.
Victoria: HEY! I’d NEVER be that kind of girl!!!
Mr. Riley: It’s called a PROMO you idiot… and you bought it hook, line and sinker! GOD, don’t take things so fucking personal. Now show me what you got… whatever it is you have…
Three minutes later…
Victoria nervously leans against the corner as Mr. Riley collects himself. He wipes some blood from his nose and tends to a scratch on his face.
Mr. Riley: Well… let’s say this… you weren’t scared to come off the ropes, which is a refreshing sight. That bloody kick of yours actually fuckin’ hurt… and you’ve got great reflexes and instinct. You were frustrating, you fucking tart… and I mean that in a good way. That was actually… a little more of a challenge than I expected. I could feel your anger at me… from when I made some… certain insinuations… that’s good! That’s how you respond to that shit. Overall… sloppy as hell… as expected… but that was actually not bad…
Victoria widens her eyes in shock.
Mr. Riley: I’m dead serious. It appears that you have some substantial natural ability… now for fuck’s sake grow some confidence will you? If you actually grow a self-esteem… you may be ticketed for stardom… I do mean that. Now fuck off and get back in line.
Victoria is a bit stunned, but happy as she rolls out of the ring and gets back in line doing the best she can to hide away from the small crowd.
A few months later…
Date: October 24, 2007
Mr. Riley: Welcome… to our affiliate local promotion… Elite Seattle Wrestling!
Victoria is with Mr. Holliday, Mr. Riley and a tag team of two male wrestlers.
Mr. Holliday: Victoria.... In the five months that you’ve been here… you’ve shown so much. You pick up our trainings at the drop of a hat and you’re really a natural at this.
Victoria: Thank you. I never thought I’d be here… so fast…
Mr. Riley: You are certainly one of the best wrestlers of your class… no doubt. Don’t get me wrong, you can be bloody annoying at times with your… well… lack of self-esteem and your occasional whining but… you’re a good hand. So… you’re going to appear on local TV for the first time tonight!
Victoria: REALLY?
Victoria’s eyes light up!
Victoria: You mean I get to wrestle in front of a crowd?
Mr. Holliday: That will come with time. But no, you’re going to be working with Nick and Dave here as their manager. You’ll be a very welcome addition to the Blue Chippers tag team. Shawn here will tell you what’s going on. I’ve got some business to take care of.
Mr. Holliday leaves the scene. Mr. Riley unhooks a large bag from above and hands it to Victoria.
Mr. Riley: Here you go… your first wrestling outfit.
Victoria: Oh my god! WOW!!!! This is AMAZING! I get my own outfit too? I’ve never been so excited in my life!!!
Victoria unzips the black bag with her eyes lit up and some big excitement on her face… but once she sees what’s inside… that excitement fades away.
Victoria: What? Mr. Riley… really?
She’s looking right at a cheerleader’s outfit.
Victoria: I… I can’t… there are way prettier girls in my class than me that… are way more extroverted…
Mr. Riley: NONSENSE! It’s called CHARISMA! Is it a silly gimmick? Yes. But being a cheerleader is perfect for you!
Victoria: Noooo… there’s no way… why me?
Mr. Riley: It’s supposed to help you grow your confidence and to step out of your comfort zone. Plus, you’re much further along than those bimbos in your class. You’re the most likely to be able to go through a table without crying. Show some spirit, Vicky!
Victoria sighs.
Victoria: I’m not going to do this…
A few minutes later…
Victoria stands in between both members of the Blue Chippers tag team in front of the camera for Victoria’s first ever pretaped promo, cheerleader outfit and all. The camera is not on yet.
Victoria: ...I can’t believe I’m doing this…
Nick: You’ve got this… don’t worry.
Dave: Yeah… just come up with some cute little rhyme and you’ll be just fine.
Mr. Riley: In three… two… one… GO!
The camera comes on.
Nick: What’s up, Seattle! It’s the Blue Chippers and do we got a surprise for you!
Dave: Yes! Those bastards in Havok Theory think that we’re a couple of dullards with no personality? Well, we not only have personality, we got SPIRIT!
Nick: And to prove that… we’d like to introduce you to our new cheerleader… Victoria!!!
Dave: Yeah! With Victoria cheering us on, there’s no way we’ll lose to you vanilla wafers tonight! So Victoria… why don’t you give us something to cheer about?
Victoria: OF COURSE! Ready… and…
Nick and Dave: GO!
Victoria: Havok Theory, you’re so dreary! You make the world so less cheery!
Have some spirit, don’t be so blue… my boys have spirit, how ‘bout you?
You can’t beat us, you’re just stuck… in the darkness… well… of course you SUCK!
Nick and Dave: BUUUUUUUURRRRRRN!!!!!!
Victoria: So when we beat you, don’t be sad! Blame yourselves for being so BAD!
So I got a special message for you… to describe your fate… as far as tonight… it’s too late! Boys… give me a D….
Dave: Anytime!
Victoria: HEY!!!! Not THAT kind of D!
Nick and Dave: D…
Victoria: Give me an O…
Nick and Dave: O!
Victoria: Give me another O!
Nick and Dave: O!
Victoria: Give me an M!
Nick and Dave: M!
Victoria: What’s that spell?
Nick and Dave: DOOM!
Victoria: And Havok Theory… that’s YOU tonight! GOOOOO BLUE CHIPPERS!
Mr. Riley flashes the cut signal and the camera cuts off.
Victoria: Dave… you’re disgusting!
Victoria rolls her eyes.
Dave: Sorry… got carried away….
Mr. Riley: ...not bad Victoria… not bad at all…
He walks away, though she’s still uncomfortable.
Victoria: That was so awkward… I’ve never… you know… done something so girly like that…
Victoria sighs, obviously not feeling comfortable in her new role just yet…
PRESENT DAY
Victoria: I hated that cheerleader shtick…
Mr. Holliday: I know you did… but it did help with your confidence.
Victoria: Yeah… it did. I wound up coming a LONG way after that…
Victoria cracks a smile.
Victoria: I think I’ll stay here for a few more days… just to soak in the memories and learn from that shy, 19-year-old that first stepped in that ring. She may have been nervous, skittish and scared… but she was strong… and I can learn so much from that dorky little cheerleader…
Victoria has a laugh, showing how secure she’s become over the years. She and Mr. Holliday continue their conversation…
October 24, 2007…
Nineteen year old Victoria sits in the locker room after the Blue Chippers have had their tag team match. Part of her is feeling thrilled after being out there… while another part of her is relieved that it’s over. She’s still uncomfortable about being in the cheerleader outfit as a slightly pained look on her face would indicate. Mr. Holliday walks in with an envelope.
Mr. Holliday: That wasn’t easy, was it?
Victoria looks at him with a slightly glistened look in her eyes.
Victoria: No… I still feel goofy wearing this… but it’s a start.
Mr. Holliday: Here, take this.
He hands her the envelope. Opening it, Victoria is stunned to find a fifty dollar bill.
Victoria: What?
Mr. Holliday: It’s your first wrestling paycheck, Victoria. Not bad for 10 minutes of work, right?
Victoria: Thank you!
She hugs him with tears of joy streaming down her face.
Mr. Holliday: You’re going to be a big star someday… I just know it…
