She had cried a lot in the past two days, ever since receiving that phone call. Ironic how the same voice that gave her hope a week ago when he told her that they found a potential donor and that the bone marrow transplant she needed to fight and win her second battle with leukemia was scheduled for April 2nd, was now crushing that little of hope and confidence she built in the previous days.
“I’m sorry Cassidy, there have been some complications. We must reschedule the transplant, and most likely find another donor…” He kept talking for a while after that, but she stopped listening. She had dropped her phone on the bed and sunk her face on the pillow, muffling her cries. “Cassidy… Cassidy…” A whole different tone, but the same voice coming from her cellular phone. Soft and comforting, rather than detached and professional as before. She picked it up again. “It’s a minor setback. We’ll find someone else, we’ll get you through this. Stay strong.”
Stay strong. Oh the bitter irony in those words. She had been strong her whole life, when she was first diagnosed with leukemia, eleven years ago. When her sister Tifa took her life. When her sister Freya took her life. Always wearing that smile, always staying positive and trying to bring happiness in her cousins’ life.
Even now that it was back.
For two weeks, she kept sparkling joy, hiding the heavy news behind the usual smile. God knows her family didn’t need it. Brittany was going through a sort of crisis, both on a personal and professional point of view. As for Christopher, he just broke up with his girlfriend. They didn’t need any other worry in their life. They needed their little cousin keeping their mind away from all the shit they’ve been going through.
And besides, Cassidy still had those long, sleepless nights curled in her bed to cry herself to sleep.
Christopher called, the breakfast was ready. Pancakes of course. Most likely with blueberries, Cass’ all time favorites. They were spoiling her so much, even more after that doctor’s call. Still in her pajamas, she walked to the kitchen, careful not to trip over Harry who was yapping and running between her legs. “Morning Chrissy.” She said, rubbing her eyes. “Where’s Brittany?”
He could only offer a shrug. Normally he didn’t come over to the guest house for breakfast but he wanted to do. Cassidy was a source of strength for him. Her every day courage to show the fight against something so evil “Probably off chasing boys as she tends to do.” He chuckled before shaking his head. “But honestly not too sure, really. Might be out for a run. She asked me to make you breakfast today, and I know how much you love blueberry pancakes.”
He put a couple on the plate for his cousin. “You get any sleep?”
Cassidy nodded, taking a seat on the chair. She picked one of the blueberries and tossed it to her Corgi pup Harry. “Yeah… I woke up around midnight cause Britty was making pizza.” A bright smile lit up her face. “It was the first time I ate so late in the night.. I wasn’t even really hungry, but it was so fun!” She yawned. “How about you?”
“Oh not too bad.” He said while he took a seat. “Was up late talking to some friends. Gonna spend the day with my pal Skylar. Gonna get fish tacos for lunch, and then go shopping. Think she’s gonna stay over for dinner too. You’ll love her.” He smiled and picked up a few sausage links before tossing one down for Harry. The corgi gobbles it up quickly and sniffled around for more.
“She seems very nice…” Chris had some struggle understanding those words, as Cassidy was talked to him while devouring the pancakes. “Is she going to be your new girlfriend?”
Chris nearly did a spit take on his coffee before giving Cassidy a weird look. “No, no she is not. Skylar is great friend of mine and we don’t think of each other like that. Think of it like you and Ethan. You’re just pals with nothing sexual behind it.” He took a sip now. “Plus I just got out of a relationship, Cass, not looking for another one just yet.”
“Oh okies!” She said giving him her sweetest smile. “I didn’t mean anything, just asking… Too bad though, from what Brittany tells me she’s very cool… And she’s also super pretty!” She poured herself a glass of milk and took a long sip, drinking more than half of it. “So… I gotta call the doctor later today. Jordan took the test and results should be ready now. He was optimistic, he said chances are good…”
Christopher sighed. He knew Jordan always wants to play the hero would say anything to get someone’s hopes up. “I looked up the success rate, Cass, It’s 30 percent. Just don’t see it happening with Jordan, but we’ll find someone, I promise.” He glanced down at his phone which was going nuts. “Trust me, we’ll find someone.”
She nodded. “Mmhmm. But I have a good feeling Jordan might be the one.. I don’t trust numbers, they always lied to me..” For a moment, her mood changed as she remembered when the doctors told her that chances of a relapse were very low after all these years. “Still, it was very sweet of him considering this option. He’s so busy with his career and taking time off from it for me… That’s so generous.”
Another sip of coffee from the unofficial leader of the Kane clan as he leans back and gives more sausage to Harry. “It is. Sorry I wasn’t able to pitch in but you know why I can’t and I hate it.” Another sigh. “But I get the feeling you’re gonna get great news today, Cass.”
He stopped and looked out the window to see Brittany pull up in her car. It only took a few moments for Britt to get inside the guest house where she and Cassidy lived, and was almost out of breath. “So sorry I’m late, guys! Had to speak to someone super important this morning.” She sat down next to Cassidy and noticed Chris had already fixed her up well. “How you feeling today, Cass?”
“Brittany!!!” She welcomed her favorite cousin with a big hug, before going back to her breakfast. “I’m good, I don’t even have a tummy ache like I thought I would for eating pizza so late!” She chuckled lightly. “Plus, we’re going to Disneyland tomorrow, and that’s something I’m really looking forward. Where have you been though? And who is this super important person?”
Brittany smiled and grabbed both of her cousin’s hands. “April 5th is going to be the hardest and yet best day of your life.” She could hardly contain her excitement. “They found a perfect match for you!”
She stood up from her seat, staring at Brittany with her mouth open and her eyes veiled by tears. “W-What??” She said stuttering. Her attention turned to Christopher. “I TOLD YOU! I KNEW HE WAS A MATCH!” She didn’t even realize she was yelling, completely overwhelmed by the news she just received.
Britt stood up and hugged her to get her to calm down as Christopher had a few tears coming down his face. Brittany looked at her cousin and grinned. “It’s not Jordan, Cassidy. He wasn’t the match.” She pauses for effect. “I am.”
Christopher nearly fell out of his chair after hearing that as Brittany doesn’t look away from her cousin. “It’s me, Cassidy. I’m the match.” With that said, Britt hugs her tightly as she attempted to not cry.
“Oh my... “ The youngest Kane instead wasn’t able to hold the tears. “Britty, I didn’t.. I don’t… Oh gosh! You…” There were so many things she would have wanted to say, but all the words died in her throat. For a long minute, the only sound she was able to make was the sobbing, muffled against her cousin’s shoulder. When she finally calmed down and pulled back, she stared in Brittany’s eyes. “I love you cuzz. This is the best day of my life…”
