(OFF-CAMERA)
There was no doubt Christopher Kane was nervous as he stopped the car. This was new for him. Completely, 100 percent new to the 22 year old. Never before had he done anything like this. He had been on plenty of dates and nights out that served as dates. He had spent last Friday night with Bree Smith going to a basketball game and getting wings, but this was the complete opposite. Not only was Christopher home on the west coast, but he was in a jet black suit, no tie, and a sense of dread.
This was unlike any other. This date… well, keep reading. He glanced over and smiled, feeling a little more calm. Something about his date tonight relaxed him. Took away the bad thoughts that crept into his head if word got out. Christopher looked out the windshield and then his phone to check the time.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Well, it’s about time for our reservation. You ready to go in?
He looks over again and grins, hoping that his date was ready to head in for a lovely evening of lobster and conversation.
Harley smiles over at Chris and glances down at his own attire for the evening: black slacks with a gray button down and a black blazer to finish things off. Something about their looks were eerily similar but Harley still felt like his own clothes were somehow inferior. He knew that Chris’ cost a lot more, but that was typically the case with anyone Harley was with these days. Still, he puts on his best smile. His mother always told him that nothing else mattered or was noticed if you had a great smile.
HARLEY TORRES: Yeah. I mean, if you’re ready.
He glances towards the restaurant and then back to Chris. He could sense a little uneasiness on him, but it was hard to get a solid read on him in this particular moment. Christopher exhaled twice and opened his car door. It was now or never. Not that if anyone saw bothered him, but it was just all new to him.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: No time like the present. Wonder how many people are going to report this to the dirtsheets.
Christopher forced out a laugh as an attempt to put himself at ease. He jogged around the car to open the car door for Harley, wanting to be a gentleman tonight.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Time to get you that lobster dinner I promised you.
A wink followed as Christopher looked around to see if anyone noticed who was here yet. He was deep inside his own head at this point. Half paranoid and half thrilled. While he tried to remain cool and collected on the outside, on the inside everything was beating fast.
HARLEY TORRES: I haven’t had many people open the door for me. Although, with guys I guess it’s a little hard to figure out who should be opening the door for who.
Harley tried his hardest to keep things light for Chris. He also couldn’t help to look around and see if anyone had noticed them. This wasn’t new to him. If it made the headlines it would change nothing known about him. He cared about how Chris felt, though, and his life could change with one headline. Harley wasn’t sure if Chris was even sure yet if he was okay with that.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I asked you out so I figured I should get the door like I would for anyone else. Why would it be different now? My mom raised me to be nice to anyone I took out.
Another forced laugh. Christopher extended his hand out for Harley to take as some sweat dripped down his forehead. The second generation wrestler was never nervous on a date. Never.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Come on or we’re going to be late, Harley. I heard if you’re late here, you’re out of luck period, and they have the best seafood.
HARLEY TORRES: Hold on just one sec.
Harley stepped in front of Chris and used his sleeve to delicately wipe the taller man’s brow.
HARLEY TORRES: Are you sure you’re alright? We don’t have to go in if this is all too fast. You don’t have to be someone new in 48 hours. There’s time. It’s not like the reservation. You’re not going to lose anything if you wait.
Christopher takes a few moments to calm himself down. He gave Harley a smile after wiping his brow, feeling some sort of comfort just in a simple action.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I’m fine. I want to do this. I don’t want to hide anything, you know? If I can’t be me, what’s the point of living, can’t be scared of life regardless how new and strange something is.
Hearing his own words gave him a shot of strength. Christopher adjusts his sleeves before looking at the front door.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I’m not someone new. I’m still Christopher Kane at the end of the day. I’m still a father, a brother and a son. Nothing has changed, right?
Harley smiled at Chris’ own words that he used to give himself strength. He gave him a single nod and then moved to open the door for him.
HARLEY TORRES: After you, Mr. Kane.
He motioned toward the open door, allowing Chris to make the final decision if he were ready to make the final step. After another exhale Christopher stepped inside and saw that the world didn’t stop to turn around at him. A few more steps until he told the hostess the party name and they were taken to their table. Chris made sure to help Harley sit down before sitting across from him.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: You look handsome tonight, Harley.
Harley couldn’t help but blush, laughing at himself for getting so affected by a simple compliment. Dating wasn’t something Harley had done much of. Anyone who followed him on Twitter could gather his type of lifestyle but that didn’t mean he didn’t enjoy romance.
HARLEY TORRES: I feel weird tonight. I don’t know what to say and that’s not usual for me. You have me tongue tied.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Oh, I’m sorry.
In that moment Christopher felt bad that he felt he dragged Harley out to this dinner. He slunk down in his chair and cleared his throat.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: If you didn’t want to be here we could’ve gotten another pizza and watched movies or something.
He got back to a more comfortable position and sipped some water that had just been poured.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: This is just a thank you, I guess, for helping me the past few days. You don’t know how much it means to me.
HARLEY TORRES: Oh, no!
Harley panicked seeing Chris’ reaction to his words. He sat up straighter and leaned across the table, reaching over to lay a hand on top of Chris’.
HARLEY TORRES: I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that this… all of this… well, it’s kind of new to me too. Guys being nice to me isn’t new because guys are typically nice to me. But being nice in a situation like this is pretty uncommon for me. It’s a good thing. I’m happy to be here with you.
He smiles across the table and looks directly into Chris’ eyes. That made Christopher feel more at ease being there. After all he never wanted to force anyone into doing something they didn’t want to do.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I’m happy to be here with you too.
He sips his water again before clearing his throat.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Even if we did this a little backwards…
His voice trailed off as his face turned a bright shade of red. Christopher had another drink of water to cool himself off for a moment.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: But I’ve always taken people out like this regardless. It’s like I told you I went out with a young lady on Friday night and treated her just the same as you, like a gentleman. Something I got away from for a while. I mean, my first date with Mel, I did some dumb things, and I don’t want to do that again.
Harley shoots Christopher a curious look and can’t help the smirk that forms on his face.
HARLEY TORRES: I have to admit that I’m curious to hear some ungentlemanly stories about the great Christopher Kane.
He chuckles at the thought while taking a sip of his water, though he’s quick to put a hand up and stop Christopher before he can say anything.
HARLEY TORRES: Not that I’m asking you to give any details about your ex or anyone. I mean, heck, you don’t have to say anything at all. Just saying that the thought had me intrigued.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I’m surprised she hasn’t spilled the beans yet herself to try to get one over on me. You know how things get on social media anymore.
Christopher shakes his head with a simple chuckle.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Got girls praising their man’s dick while going out and then saying it was the worst one they ever had after. Don’t think Mel is that petty, but it’s in the past and I’m moving on, as cold as it sounds.
Sip of water follows as Christopher glances through the menu.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: She was the first person I told about this, and she’s kept a lid on it. That’s made me happy.
HARLEY TORRES: She worked my show that held last year before… well, before things for dark for me.
Speaking of darkness, it dulls the look on Harley’s eyes and he distracts himself with another sip of water as he takes a moment to push on from it.
HARLEY TORRES: Anyway. She was great to work with. I’m glad she’s done you well. You deserve to be treated right. I mean, if you’re this nice and sweet to everyone you spend time with.
He shook his head no.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I didn’t treat the mother of my child real well. It’s why I don’t get to see him often. Got a son named Tyler. He’s bit over 3 years old old going onto 4. I treated her real bad when I was drinking and taking pain killers. Messed it up bad. I get to see him twice a month under her supervisor at the bar she works at.
Chris pulls his phone out and shows Harley a picture of him and his son.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: He doesn’t know/remember I’m his dad and we’re waiting for the right time to tell him that this guy who stops in town every couple of weeks to see him. He looks like just like me when I was that age.
A smile comes on his face, almost a sense of pride talking about his son.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: He’s so smart.
The smile quickly turns to a couple of tears as he did wish he was able to see Tyler more often. Harley is a little caught off guard when Christopher drops the news that he has a child. He sits and listens patiently and can’t help but smile at the picture. When Christopher falls silent, Harley leans forward to talk a little more personally.
HARLEY TORRES: I had no idea you had a son but I think it’s a great that you’re doing your best to make up for how you treated his mother. You could have walked away like a lot of men do.
He reaches out, using his thumb to wipe away one of Christopher’s tears.
HARLEY TORRES: But you’re not like most men. I’m getting that.
Christopher brings his head up and tries to smile.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I just want to be a better dad than mine was. Someday I’ll tell you about him, maybe. He was a monster. A real live monster.
He puts the menu at the side of the table now, ready for their waiter to finally swing by for their order.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Sorry to dump this on you, but I feel like if you got to know me a little more, I don’t know…
Chris didn’t know where he was going with that. The words were a jumbled mess in his head as he just wanted to kiss Harley.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: But since I’ve realized that I am what I am, I don’t feel so mad anymore. Like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. I’m not pissed at the world. I don’t hate anything as much. I don’t understand why coming to terms of being bi would do this to a person.
HARLEY TORRES: Hey, you don't have to worry about dumping anything on me. I'm here to listen. I'm here for you. I'm glad that you're adjusting well. A lot of people don't for one reason or another. It's never really been a thing for me, so I couldn't relate. I'm just glad I don't need to relate because you're doing great.
He smiles across the table at Christopher and crosses his arms on the table to lean forward a little more.
HARLEY TORRES: Honestly, when you first messaged me I didn't expect us to end up doing something like this. It's been one pleasant surprise after pleasant surprise since I've met you.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: You’re not the only person I’ve been surprising, I think.
Chris smiles too as he takes a drink of water while looking around to see what everyone else was doing.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I’ve been surprising myself. I finally just feel at peace. I was miserable for a long time. Even others in wrestling saw I wasn’t a happy person no matter what I won or what I did. But now, being Millennium Champion, figuring out life and trying to get the rest sorted, I can honestly tell people I’m happy and not have it be a lie.
HARLEY TORRES: That I can relate with. I mean, I never felt like I was living a lie. I guess I just didn't realize what was missing from my life. I never had any luck with girls growing up or even when I first got into wrestling. When I realized that I liked guys too… I mean, this door opened in my life and everything just clicked. Before I knew it, I was meeting people left and right. Now women are actually noticing me too!
Harley laughs, shaking his head as he thinks about how he would have felt a few years ago if women were interested in him the way they have been since he started being with men as well.
HARLEY TORRES: I guess I just gained a measure of confidence I didn't know I was missing.
Chris keeps smiling as he listens to Harley before he stops.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Yeah, I get that. I feel like there is a pep in my step now. It’s liberating, almost. The only thing that worries me is how everyone will react when they eventually do find out. My family took it well, so I think that’s all that really should matter.
He looks around for the waiter again as his stomach rumbles.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I really wish that waiter would show up. I’m starving!
Harley looks around the restaurant, catching the waiter's attention and waving him down to come over so that they can give their orders. Once the waiter departs, Harley glances back in Christopher's direction and is unable to hide his smile catching the other man's eyes.
HARLEY TORRES: So, uh, have you told your brother? Um, Jordan, I mean.
Chris shook his head. He knows that will be a weird conversation to have with Jordan eventually.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Not yet. I don’t know if I should mention you or just say what I am. It’d be awkward for him to know what we did, I think. I don’t want to make him feel weird.
His smiles goes away, replaced with some concern.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: Then again he married a looney without really giving us any warning so I guess it’d be about the same to tell him I fucked his tag partner.
Harley laughs, unable to stop it even after a few moments so he covers his mouth and shakes his head.
HARLEY TORRES: I mean, part of me feels bad that I haven't told him. He's my tag partner, after all. I know your relationship with him a lot deeper and I don't feel it's my place. And like you said, he didn't tell any of us that he was getting married but I'm not even going to get into that. I don't need to hear her say, again, that it wasn't about any of us.
He shakes his head and holds a hand up to stop himself from going back down that road that he closed off a long time ago.
HARLEY TORRES: Jordan and I aren't even talking right now anyway.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: I got through periods of that with him too. He’s hard to reach at times, and Ariana isn’t really helping him at all. She’s a psycho that’s going to ruin him.
Chris sighs and leans back in his chair.
CHRISTOPHER KANE: He deserves better than her, but he continues to make awful choices for his relationships. Brittany Williams wasn’t too much better. The boy needs to stop thinking with his dick and use his head. But, I mean, let’s stop talking about him. I just want to enjoy my night with you.
He puts his hand on the table and gives Harley perhaps one of the most warm smiles of his life. Harley smiles and puts his hand on top of Christopher's, giving it a gentle squeeze.
HARLEY TORRES: I'm already enjoying my night with you.
Embarrassed by his own cheesiness, Harley chuckles and looks for something to distract himself which is conveniently the arrival of their meal.
