Everything had to be perfect. Today was the big day. Christopher Kane, wearing a nice button up shirt and khaki shorts, had a smile on his face as he sat down outside near the outside dining area of his massive home. It was a BBQ area with a few burners, small fridge among other amenities that accompany such an area. Christopher watched his grill put the finishing touches of a large piece of brisket. The meat had to be perfect, the side dishes, the drinks, everything about tonight needed to be perfect.
After all, it was the first time either Mel or himself had a birthday since their relationship had began a few months ago. There was some nerves building, but he was crazy about her, often referring to her as his “dream girl.” Melissa Reeves was the fierce, feisty, take no shit woman he had always envisioned in his head.
“You know…” Melissa walked out, wearing a casual dress; neat but not over the top formal, “that smells really great.” She sniffed up and smiled. “Really great, actually.”
She moved closer and gave him a kiss and quick hug, before settling herself down at their table. “You didn’t have to go to all this effort though, really. I mean, it’s a lot. You’ve done a lot.”
He shook his head and put an arm around her. Chris smiled and kissed her cheek. “You think this brisket is effort? All it took was a good rub and know how to cook it.” He kept that smile. “I mean, doing a side salad with homemade ranch was pretty easy, and the potato wedges were simple too.”
To most it wouldn’t be that simple, but Chris took to cooking like a fish to water when he started a few years ago. “My original idea was for a veal parm, but I didn’t want to go to the bother of making pasta tonight.” A shrug follows. “So this was hardly any effort for the most amazing woman in the world.”
She scoffed and shrugged. “Of course you’d manage to diminish a compliment by breaking down how easy everything is. A well cooked brisket is still an effort, and the thought that went into everything was too. So you take that compliment, take it. Don’t ruin my birthday, you butt.” She gave a little grin, but folded her arms.
Christopher smirked back after being called a butt. He made sure to stand up and give it a wiggle before walking to the BBQ. He opened the lid as some smoke escaped, the brisket having looking perfect. “Wow, that’s sexy. Should get this put on Instagram or something silly like that.” He snickered. “Just gotta let this rest now and we should be ready to eat in a few moments. Seen enough cooking shows to know you let something like this sit for a bit.”
He winked and went back next to her. “And thank you. Doing brisket can be hard if you don’t know what you’re doing. But you, you can just do everything so easily. Like smacking a bitch in the face with a bat.” Seeing Mel’s bad side really did trigger something in him. “And the last thing I’d ever want to do is ruin your birthday.”
“You’re safe from the bat, unless you do ruin my birthday in which case I’d say run.” She laughed and shrugged. “Look, it’s like anything else in life; either you ask and hope that you get what you want, or you use your strength to go take what you want. It’s sometimes easier to give an apology than ask for permission, you know?”
She leaned against the table. “I guess that’s what I’ve been learning, especially with that stuff with Grace. Now it’s like, I don’t want to ask. I don’t want to be that predictable girl who does as she’s told because she thinks doing the right thing will get her anywhere cause, shit, it really doesn’t.”
He nodded his head. “I get it. I’m pretty sure Grace has it out for me now. She’s doing everything she can to end me, and I’m not going to stop. Not until I am the face of Millennium whether she likes it or not.”
Chris stood and went to the grill to begin working with the brisket and getting their plates ready for dinner. “I do miss seeing you more often though. I really hate that part. But with Jordan beating me in the Young Guns Cup and the Cult Classic getting close to done, should be able to see each other more again.”
“Grace is a bitch, but I’m not done with her yet.” She gave a little smirk. “But yeah, the Cult Classic winding down is a big thing for me, for us. It’ll be nice to see you more, you know? Flying all around the world each week gets a bit tiring.”
He puts a few strips of meat on two plates along with some of the salad and potatoes before bringing them to the table. Chris popped open a bottle of wine and poured them each. “Dinner is ready, m’lady. I hope you enjoy.” He smiled and sat down. “Grace brought up Tyler. Can’t forgive that. Didn’t like it when she brought up Chuck’s boy either.”
A sigh. “Some things should be left alone. If I found out she had an abortion or lost a kid or couldn’t see one, I wouldn’t say a damn word about it.” Chris leaned back in his chair and shook his head. “I feel sometimes I’d be better off just finding a new company to call home, but mama didn’t raise a quitter.”
Melissa moved to hold his hand. “I know. It’s tough, when they treat you that way. It’s not easy to have someone just...walk all over you or your life. Bringing Tyler up was wrong, but not only that...it was a mistake. I know you’ll make her pay for it. What she doesn’t know is I’ll have your back, because she thinks I’m done there.”
He forced a smile and didn’t want to dwell on their professional problems, not today. “Look, we have all day tomorrow to think about our careers. Tonight is about you, your birthday. My dream woman, nearly a cougar out here dating me.” He laughed. “I hope you had a wonderful lunch with Aubrey today.”
She sat up straighter and nodded. “You’re right, I’m sorry. Although, cougar? I’m not too old to give you a smack for that, don’t you know?” She giggled and nodded. “Aubrey was amazing company, as ever. At least it gave you a bit of time to prepare this fantastic looking meal without me hovering around, too.”
He smiled and nodded. “Yep. Completely unplanned that way too. Just worked out in my favor.” He took a bite.”Really well how that worked out. I think Cassidy is gonna bring that cake over later tonight so we can enjoy that.” Another bite. “But back to you being a cougar, why would you hit me for that? Let us not forget the last time you hit me it led to a threeway.”
She rolled her eyes and took a bite of her food. “I’m not a trophy, Christopher Kane.” She stared at his as her knife cut into the meat. “And you’d do well to remember it!” She sat back a bit and smirked. “Looking forward to seeing Cassidy though, didn’t expect her to make a cake.”
“You’re right, you’re not a trophy, you’re a person!” He laughed. “If you were a trophy, I’d have to put you on the mantle.” Another laugh. “Cass is a great kid. Tough as nails too. Survived leukemia as a kid. Worried it came back but I don’t think it has.”
“Really?” She frowned a little. “I didn’t know that about her. She must be strong, to survive that. It’s terrible. She seems like a good person though. Like, Britty seems a lot less...uhhhh, aggressive, let’s say, with her around?”
He nodded. “Oh, she’s a great influence on Britt. Gets her away from watching porn, flirting with guys and fucking a couch.” Shrug followed. “Made a promise to Freya I’d look after Cassidy before she died. That’s why she’s here with us now. She’s innocent and doesn’t know much about the world, so in any help is great to keep her from changing is awesome.”
“Innocence is a rare thing. It’s worth her trying to keep it where she can.” She shrugged. “Not like you, yours is long gone. Too late for you, for us.”
He put down his fork and stared at her. “Look here you, I was an innocent virgin until I met you!” Chris smirked and waited to see how she’d take that one.
“And I was the queen of England.” She folded her arms. “You’re not a very convincing liar, Mr Kane, don’t try that on me. Especially on my birthday of all days!”
He kept smiling and got up. “Well, I wasn’t trying to be convincing at all, just make a nice joke, Mel.” He pulled her up out her chair. “Being able to spend time with you on your birthday like this is great. I hope you’ve enjoyed your day because, well, I got you a gift…” Chris’ voice trails off as he pulls a box out of his pocket. “This isn’t what you think, trust me.”
Her brow furrowed a little, but she resisted freaking out. He’d teased asking for marriage before, he’d even drunkenly dropped the question once, only to be rebuked and told off. Would he risk that again? Likely not.
She watched as he opened a small box, inside which lay a car key and keyring. “What’s…” Her voice trailed off a little. “Chris, really, you didn’t have to do that. It’s just a birthday.” Was she blushing? Maybe a tad.
“I remember when we walked past a dealership you saw that BMW and was like ‘I want that someday.’” He grinned. “I didn’t forget. And, I also told you I don’t need to put a ring on you to love you and to show that love. I just thought the box would be a fun gag cuz you look so cute when you furrow your brow.”
She half looked ready to slap him, but instead gave him a kiss and a cuddle. “Well thank you. Let’s go play with it after dinner, yeah? A nice way to round out today, a really perfect day. Thank you for this, Chris.”
