3x12 ALL THINGS MUST PASS
Medical Bay
January 2nd, 2022
9:36 AM
The Medical Bay area is a part of The Academy we don’t get to see very often, luckily. But that was where we found two of our students this morning, sitting on a couple of chairs right outside the infirmary. Ava Grimes looked particularly nervous, tapping her foot on the floor frantically as she kept her eyes glued to the closed door, eagerly waiting for it to open.
Her anxiety was quite understandable, actually. She had finally decided to take Martell’s advice and get that second medical opinion, hoping to shorten the recovery time and get fully cleared to return to competition, one month after the mild concussion suffered at episode 9. After a morning spent doing the same tests she got unfortunately familiar with, she was now waiting to hear the verdict from Scott’s father, a famous neuro-surgeon from New York.
Scott Martell:
Don’t panic. He’s the best at what he does. Trust me.
Scott Martell replied, leaning back in his chair with his hands behind his hand. Whilst Ava looked certainly concerned and worried, Scott was the picture of calmness, chewing on gum as Ava panicked beside him.
Scott Martell:
Just know that you made the right decision coming here. Dad flew out on his week off for this, and he doesn’t take half measures.
Even though he sounded calm and reassuring, Scott’s voice still startled the zoned-out Grimes. Coming back to planet Earth, she needed a brief moment to regain her bearings but eventually flashed a smile at Scott.
Ava Grimes:
I know, and I really appreciate him doing this. Thank you for making this happen, by the way.
She let out a sigh, leaning back into the chair as she tried to calm herself down.
Ava Grimes:
I’m just a bit nervous, that’s all. I don’t even know why, I feel pretty well, I even started some light training as the doctor said. But I want to get back in that ring, and not in two weeks. I feel ready, I read a lot of articles online and usually concussions like mine heal in two weeks… I don’t know why the fuck they’re keeping me benched still.
Scott Martell:
Yeah, well… Dad will know.
It was at this moment that the door opened to the waiting room. The doctor was standing there, looking like a slightly taller, spitting image of Scott himself, though his hair was greying and was cropped much shorter.
Doctor Martell:
Scottie… Ms. Grimes… Would you like to come in?
Doctor Martell then vanished behind the door, with the younger Martell patting Ava on the back and helping her up. Scott swaggered into the room, with Ava following, and the office had scans and reports on Ava pinned up on the wall. The Doctor then invited Ava to take a seat.
The young girl tried to conceal her nervousness behind a smile, as she slowly sat in front of Dr. Martell. She glanced to her left, almost making sure Scott was still there and sighing in relief at the sight of her friend sitting next to her.
Ava Grimes:
I don’t know if I already told you, but I appreciate you coming here. Scott just told me it’s your week off, I didn’t mean to bother and pin more work on you…
She apologized to the doctor, resting her arms on the armchair as she tried to find a comfortable position on the chair. Her eyes scanned the room, looking at all the images of her brain. It’s not like she pretended to be able to read them, but they looked fine, or maybe she was just trying to convince herself.
Doctor Martell:
It is my week off, yes. But Scott convinced me to change our plans for New Year and visit Chicago instead. We were hoping to have him back in New York for the New Year, but he asked me to check up on you, and there was quite the party arranged, if I remember correctly.
Scott shared a glance with Ava, giving her a little wink as his father went on.
Doctor Martell:
I also wanted to see if our financial investment in Scott’s chosen career was paying dividends. I was apprehensive, given the repeated risk of head injuries in your business. But it does seem that this Academy is living up to expectations, and Scott isn’t wasting his time here. Though I can make some recommendations to improve the medical facilities here. Minor improvements, but I will pass my recommendations to the director.
Scott Martell:
Dad, we’re here for Ava, not to review the Academy.
The doctor nodded his head, turning back to the scans as he held a pointer towards them.
Doctor Martell:
I can’t tell you anything that the team here haven’t explained already. They all achieved reasonable scores at medical score, and all diagnosis is 100% correct. However…
He picked up a file, flicking through it as he went through the Academy Doctor’s note.
Doctor Martell:
According to their notes and recommendations… They have stated that you are fit to return to training now and to return to competitive action within 2 weeks. Their decision is based pretty much off the textbook, and would be correct in most circumstances. However… after observing how the injury was occurred, the severity of it and your current recovery process, I would ire on the side of caution, and recommend you take an additional week of rest.
Ava Grimes:
What?
She blurted out at the absolutely unexpected news. She turned her head to Scott, looking daggers at him as if, as irrational as it sounded, she was blaming him for his father’s medical opinion. It was a gut reaction, one she quickly apologized for.
Ava Grimes:
I’m sorry Dr. Martell, but are you serious about this? I feel good, I haven’t had any dizziness in forever, the strobe lights we had at the party didn’t give me any issue, I started training a couple of days ago and I have zero issues…
Turning once again toward Scott, she grabbed his arm and lightly shook him.
Ava Grimes:
Come on Scott.. Tell him… Do something!
Scott blinked. It was almost as if this wasn’t the answer he was expecting either. Looking over to his father, his Dad gave him a curt nod and The Great One shook his head.
Scott Martell:
My Dad’s the best at what he does. That’s why I wanted you to speak to him. He doesn’t make mistakes.
Doctor Martell:
This would be more of a precautionary matter. I’ve dealt with a number of boxers, mixed martial artists and especially football players in the same situation. Too many of them try to rush back too early, and I can see your heart is set on returning as quickly as possible. I just feel that in the long run, a further seven days is going to be beneficial to you going forward.
Grimes kept shaking her head while father and son talked to her. It seemed pretty clear that Dr. Martell had her best interest at heart when he gave her his diagnosis, but Ava just wasn’t taking any of that.
Ava Grimes:
You said he would have helped. You told me that the doctor here at the Academy is too cautious and that he was delaying your return more than it was necessary.. You know how hard it is to sit back and watch everyone else progress, Scotty. You’re supposed to understand, you were supposed to help me… What the fuck is this, huh?
She pushed the chair back and stood up, her expression was a mix of disappointment and frustration.
Ava Grimes:
Are you trying to hold me back too?
The question was addressed to her fellow student. He seemed about to reply, perhaps trying to calm her down and talk some sense in her, but she turned on her heels and left the room, mumbling a “fuck this” under her breath.
Scott Martell:
Ava!
Scott called out to her, The Great One turning his head to his father and shaking his head as he chased off after her.
