Sammy had just asked Reign to meet up and talk before they agreed to meet at her dorm room at the Academy. Sammy walked up to her door, wearing a Nightfall hoodie, baggy pajama pants and a pair of slides. He stopped in front and normally, he’d walk right in but for some reason, he felt compelled to knock this time.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
He tapped his knuckles on the door three times before placing his hands into the pocket of his hoodie, waiting for Reign to answer the door.
Reign answered the door, also wearing a Nightfall hoodie that belonged to Sammy and baggy, plaid pajama bottoms. When the door opened the light filtering out highlighted the bruises around her cheek and eyes. The handiwork of Saoirse Tyrell and her merry band of masked morons.
When Reign's eyes met Sammy's she sighed and leaned up against the door frame.
Reign Reyes: "I know. I took it too far. It's just..."
She exhaled, appearing every bit defeated before she raised her arms, letting the massive sleeves of the sweatshirt wave about before flopping them back down. Sammy frowned as he looked at the damage done to her by Saoirse again before he shook his head and sighed. Before Sammy even said anything, he grabbed the ends of the sweatshirt sleeves and pulled them toward him, effectively pulling Reign into himself for a hug. He wrapped his arms around her gently and rubbed her back.
Sammy Grimes:"I love you, you know that, right? No matter what, I'll always love you."
She nodded while vanishing into his grasp.
Reign Reyes: "I know. I'm just so angry, Sammy. Like REALLY angry. I messed up and I own that. I listened to my grandfather and decided to play everything above board in a freaking Last Woman Standing match, how dumb was that? Then I absolutely get my ass handed to me the entire cult and I feel doubley dumb... if that's even possible. So Ava freaking out over me thanking the Division just set me off."
She looked up at him, her eyes dark saucers of emotion.
Reign Reyes: "She didn't wonder if I was okay. She didn't even ask. People I didn't even know asked but not my best friend?! That hurts. And yes, after everything that happened with you and Jack and the kidnapping, I made it clear to my uncle that you and Ava were off limits. I picked you two because of the kidnapping. I didn't think I needed to add CJ too. If I'm being honest, I don't think I did anything wrong but I apologized anyways. CJ understood. Ava still didn't. I didn't word it right or I wasn't remorseful enough. I just got my fucking brains scrambled and nearly had a symbol cut into my fucking arm!"
She was screaming at this point, her voice trembling as she did so. She even lifted up her arm to show Sammy but it was covered by the sweatshirt. Sammy gently placed his hand on her arm that was cut and gently pushed it down.
Sammy Grimes: "I know, Reign, I know. And I'm not here to try and pile on or make things worse. I want to be here for you and I want you to let all of this out to me."
He placed his hands on her cheeks as he peered down into her eyes.
Sammy Grimes: "But I also needed you to take a step back and breathe before handling things emotionally. Because that's what you and Ava did. Both of you. Neither of you gave me a chance to talk to either of you before you kept going at each other's throats and now look where we are? Can this shit even be repaired?"
He looked away and shook his head.
Sammy Grimes:"My entire world is Ava and you and now I'm caught in the middle, scrambling to try and clean this mess up because I know that neither of you really mean some of the vile shit you've both said."
Reign couldn't help but smile.
Reign Reyes: "Honestly? I don't think the stuff I've said to her is all that vile. I saved the vile stuff for the other casualties who staggered into my blast zone. What's the worst thing I said to Ava? That I used her for clothes? She knows that's a lie. Go look at her phone right now and scroll to the last DM I sent her. Know what it says? I love you. That's what I wrote. She never replied. This was weeks ago. Long before we were fighting. So anything I may have said during my little outburst, pales in comparison to the ways she takes my friendship for granted."
Sammy shakes his head.
Sammy Grimes: "Fine. You're right, it's not that bad I guess. But nonetheless, Ava doesn't operate like you and I do, Reign. She's not as easily available emotionally, do you understand? And there's reasons for that. There's reasons for those barriers. Scary fucking reasons."
Sammy paused and bit down on his tongue, knowing that he had to choose what and what not to say.
Sammy Grimes: "There's things that I'm not at liberty to say but what I can tell you is that there's a reason Ava connected to Ashleigh so easily. There's similarities there, especially with their mental health... At least I think. Yeah..."
He shrugged his shoulders.
Sammy Grimes: "What I'm trying to say is, you can't give all this love and affection and then expect the same to come back to you from Ava. You need to give it time, you need to give her time to let you break down her barriers and walls."
Sammy grabbed Reign's hand and slightly smiled.
Sammy Grimes: "I love how hard you've tried with her to be her friend. I love how much you feel and how much you care. But I need you to take a step back and let things settle before trying again with Ava. Because right now, the barriers that you did break down? You built them back up. But it doesn't mean it's over. It just means you have to work for it."
He looked down and shook his head.
Sammy Grimes: "It's up to you if you want to work for it. But I'll tell you now, it would mean the world to me if you did. Because that's my sister and my best friend. She's always going to be a part of me."
Sammy looked up now, a serious look came over his eyes.
Sammy Grimes: "And I will do anything to protect her. Do you understand? Like I told you when I walked in here, I will always, always love you. But I can't let anything ever get in the way of protecting Ava."
Reign's brow arched, her jaw dropping a little and she instinctively stepped back.
Reign Reyes: "Sort of sounds like you just gave me an ultimatum, or at the very least made it pretty clear where you'll fall if things don't get patched up between Ava and I. Also sounds like all that heavy lifting will fall on me because she's emotionally unavailable or whatever."
Reign stood there, ego clearly bruised, her mind trying to process what she just heard.
Sammy Grimes: "Woah, woah, woah."
Sammy grabbed her hands with his and gripped them tightly.
Sammy Grimes: "It's not an ultimatum and I'm not going to leave you if things don't get fixed. I'm just telling you how it is. And I... I wish I could tell you everything."
Sammy's eyes started to well up as he squeezed Reign's hands tightly, almost a little too tight.
Sammy Grimes: "When I was taken by Jack and them? And they locked me in a room, tied up and blind folded, beating me down day after day and barely giving me any food or water? I didn't give a fuck about me. Do you understand that?"
Tears started to stream down his cheeks, this was the first time Reign had ever seen Sammy cry.
Sammy Grimes: "The only thing on my mind was getting back to Ava because of how scared and alone she must have felt. Because I promised her... I fucking promised her that I would never, ever leave her behind. I promised her that she would see or hear from me every day and even though it was out of my control? I broke that promise. I fucking broke it."
He paused, trying to regain composure but the emotions were too much. He had been holding them back ever since Jack let him go. He acted strong when he returned but it was all a charade. He felt a massive amount of guilt and he had been holding it all in until this moment. He looked down in shame, shaking his head.
Sammy Grimes: "All I can say is that Ava and I were separated at one point and that eventually, I was able to get back to her before we moved to Vegas and eventually told Gavin who we were. That's all I can say. We were separated from each other for awhile and I told her it wouldn't happen again, okay? That's it."
There was a flood of emotions washing over Reign in that moment but the one that was the strongest, the one that she couldn't hide, was anger. Unbridled rage simmering deep inside her. It wasn't at Sammy or Ava, but it was there and it was powerful. She leaned in close and rested her forehead against Sammy's, looking him directly in his eyes.
Reign Reyes: "Hey, look at me. It's okay. I'll never be the reason you're separated from your sister, okay? I won't do that to you or her. I care too much for both of you. Though... you know... at some point that shit may get awkward if you and I move in together."
Reign grinned, hoping to lighten the moment. Sammy sniffled before he wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his hoodie. He couldn't help but laugh lightly at that last line before he swallowed hard and replied.
Sammy Grimes: "It could get awkward but it would be worth it for me. I need you both in my life. No ultimatums, no choosing, none of that bullshit. I need my sister and I need the girl that I fell in love with the first moment I laid eyes on her."
He placed his hand on her chin before leaning in and kissing her softly.
Sammy Grimes: "I don't care how young and dumb we are, I know that I want to be with you for the rest of my life, Reign. I love you. Even though you're crazy as hell sometimes."
He smiled widely, trying his best not to laugh now. She nodded towards her room.
Reign Reyes: "Care to spend the night. I'm still pretty sore but I think I can show just how crazy I can be."
He playfully thinks it over.
Sammy Grimes: "You don't gotta ask me twice!"
He interlocks his fingers with hers before nodding and walking into the room with her.
Knock. Knock.
