The environment was still, and everything was quiet. She bent down beneath a dome-like crate and stared across the way, before glancing over at him.
Haylie LaFleur: “Apollo.”
She stated, having affectionately called him that since forcing him into a Battlestar Galactica marathon with her. The name was ultimately fitting though as the two shared a great deal of stark similarities.
Haylie LaFleur: “Are you ready?”
She asked, now gripping a gun-like object in her hand she took aim, and didn’t give him time to confirm or deny as she rushed into the field. There were lights surrounding the building, a display of massive proportions when suddenly a large, alien-like creature emerged. She halted her running before taking aim just as the creature exploded, but not from the firing of her weapon. Haylie could only turn and laugh looking back at him, clearly better on the trigger than she was.
Haylie LaFleur: “Heeeeeyyyyy you stole my kill!”
She said this but it was with no menace whatsoever. She could only laugh further. The mission for today had been to attempt playing the new virtual reality game a friend of hers was building and while it had always been her lifelong mission to be an alien huntress, she’d brought Rhys along instead as the dynamics needed someone with real action experience to give the game enough of an edge so that it was fun to play. Haylie couldn’t think of anyone better to test out this experiment with.
Rhys couldn’t help but laugh as he looked over at Haylie.
Rhys Adelson: “I did, but on the battlefield? There’s no ‘stealing kills.’ Video game or not? I have to protect my girl.”
And right when he said that, an alien popped out behind him. BANG! With pinpoint precision, Haylie shot it and saved the unsuspecting Rhys. Rhys’ eyes widened as he looked surprised.
Rhys Adelson: “There you go. You got your kill back right there.”
Haylie LaFleur: “I was just trying to save my girl.”
She said mockingly though it was clearly in a joking manner, the truth was there was a redness that highlighted her cheeks just hearing him call her that.
Haylie LaFleur: “but don’t try to fool me there Rhysie, I know you saw that coming”
She said with a grin. She learned a long while ago just how aware he actually was of his surroundings in a way she found it fascinating.
And sure enough, right as an alien popped out? Rhys' real life skills were shown off in the virtual world. Rhys didn't even turn around to blow the enemy away, he simply pointed his gun behind and bang! A no look kill.
Rhys Adelson: "Well, I guess you might be onto me, LaFleur!"
He grinned widely and shrugged.
Rhys Adelson: "That wasn't my first no look shot either."
Haylie could only laugh and shake her head, truly while the nature of how he had acquired those skills entered her mind from time to time, she did her best to not ask those questions. Even though he was candid about his experiences with the military and overall the work he did with Saber Solutions, it wasn’t something they really discussed much and something she figured he’d rather separate from his personal life and professional life. Haylie didn’t pressure him there instead she chose to live blissfully unaware almost which for such a smart girl seemed. . . well rather risky if we were gauging things scientifically.
Yet, still moments like this she found herself enjoying every second of her time and that was a rarity in the world.
Haylie LaFleur: “I knew it!”
She chuckled, but still she made her way forward, while Rhys was the real world marksman who had the vision of an eagle, Haylie’s contribution was figuring their way into the complex and working on cracking the code to the entrance so they could carry out their mission here before being over run by the aliens. All in a day’s work she supposed.
Haylie LaFleur: “I bet you show those skills off to everyone you meet huh?”
She measured with a laugh, she knew better of course, but she couldn’t deny her flirtatiousness with him. Something about Rhys brought out all of her sides, and so far she hadn’t scared him away either by revealing them, even if it had been ever so slowly.
Rhys Adelson: "You would think, huh?"
He stood next to her in the VR but also outside of it, as his sense were always on point, even when he couldn't actually see since he was in the game. He placed his arm around her waist as he pulled her into him.
Rhys Adelson: "But I don't. I actually don't usually show off to anyone at all, in fact. But everything is different when I'm around you, Haylie. I never thought I could open myself up another human being ever again, but you came into my life and shattered all of my expectations for myself."
He shrugged his shoulders.
Rhys Adelson: "So, I guess what I'm saying is, you're the only girl I'd ever show off for. I literally don't notice anyone else. Just you. Only you."
While Haylie’s genuine disposition was both fun and carefree you could genuinely see her surprise and truthfully it distracted her enough that she botched whatever code she was supposed to be working on and boom the VR goggles called for a game over but not before she offered him the faintest smile and the flushing of her cheeks that showed so clearly on her pale features.
Haylie LaFleur: “I’m happy to know that.”
She stated, almost in disbelief. If you looked at Rhys he was a well-built man, military clean cut, delicate blue eyes, tattoos that gave him what most might consider a gruff exterior, but Haylie definitely saw deeper. He was smarter than he gave himself credit for, quietly sophisticated in the most unique of ways, and the scientist in her was always inquired to study him more. To her Rhys Adelson was the most fascinating man she’d ever met.
Haylie LaFleur: “I am glad you meant that too, because I wouldn’t want you too.”
She was very simple in stating those intentions, she only wanted his focus on her as selfish as that might seem.
Haylie LaFleur: “oh uh, I think we need a respawn”
She said with a laugh just as the game reset itself to where they were before
Rhys shook his head as he dropped the controls to the VR and then grabbed Haylie and pulled her into him. While his VR headset was still on, his training made it to where he knew exactly where Haylie was without his eyesight.
Rhys Adelson: "I'm not worried about the game right now."
With his arms wrapped around Haylie's waist, Rhys leaned down and his lips met hers gently. He kissed her softly as he couldn't avoid it anymore. While he was always a complete gentleman around Haylie, Rhys just could not wait another second. With things being so stop and go, with him being shipped off to Africa for over a year, Rhys couldn't let another moment slip.
Haylie responded to his kiss, returning it deeply. If she had been aware of their environment before she no longer was at all now, feeling his hands around her waist, she almost melted into him. What was going on here, a girl like her didn’t land a guy like this, not in reality, was the VR playing tricks with her mind now? She would’ve been amused by that thought had it not been for the softness of his lips still dancing over hers, she melted into him, letting him support all of her weight, something she rarely if ever had done in her entire life, but he held her as if it were nothing.
Parting from his kiss, she felt herself struggling to catch her breath, now realizing those pesky VR goggles were a thing of the past she could only giggle in a super girly way, one that typically didn’t match her voice at all. There was a room full of developers, some of which were her friends, watching her have a romantic type movie scene unfold before their eyes.
Haylie LaFleur: “Uhh, maybe we should. Get out of here.”
She measured to him but not before taking a leap up to his shoulders wrapping her legs around his waist and securing that kiss again and making sure he understood just how badly she had wanted it too. It had been a long wait and while Haylie was accustomed to keeping things casual with most, she knew to a guy like Rhys, that when it was time to commit he was all the way in and that for her, was something special.
Rhys lifted the VR goggles off of his head before he helped Haylie take hers off as well. He looked around at the shocked nerdy developers and chuckled, he didn't care that they all watched him kiss Haylie. He had been in literal warzones, on spy missions and so much more things where he was under pressure. This? It was nothing. In fact... He leaned in for another kiss and he surprised Haylie with one, planting his lips on hers as she was in his arms. After a few moments, he broke the kiss with a smile.
Rhys Adelson: "Yeah, I think the testing period is over. We should get out of here and go somewhere private."
Haylie could only affirm his words, Agreeing that it was time to get out of there and allow themselves the private time they needed. Though even if she had objected she was already in his grip and wouldn’t have been able to go much place had she wanted to. She only laughed as he began to carry her towards the exit though and she waved off to anyone who might be paying attention, hoping they had whatever data they needed for their software, because it was likely they weren’t going to be returning for round two in the gaming center.
Haylie LaFleur: “Apollo.”
