The quality of the image isn’t the best, exactly what you’d expect from a hidden camera. Because that’s where the footage we are seeing comes from, it’s not one of the “official” cameras inside the principal’s office, those are likely turned off. The timestamp in the top right corner tells us that the footage dates back to Sunday, the day after the big Halloween party.
It’s half past nine in the evening, and while it’s not unseen to see Gianluigi Vaccaro work extra hours, it’s at least unusual to see him here on weekends, a time of the week he always admitted he enjoys spending with his wife and daughter.
And on top of that, it doesn’t look like he’s working. Leaning against the desk rather than sitting behind it, the Principal is talking with one of the students, the latest addition Arina.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
Hmm… Let me see it…
Gian raises his hand, bringing it closer to Arina’s face. As soon as his finger trails over her cheekbone, the young girl draws her head back, a painful expression coming across her face.
Arina:
I.. I will be fine. I hurt myself again in the match, otherwise I would already be.
Earlier this week, Arina got hit by a leaping knee strike from Ava during a training session, or rather after their coach halted the sparring session and she had already lowered her guard. This didn’t prevent her from stepping in the ring on Friday, when she received another stiff strike to that same part during the tag match.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
You need to be careful, both in training and in the ring. Never let the guard down, and remember that if you recently had even the slightest injury, that’s likely what your opponents are going for.
Arina:
Ava said she didn’t do it on purpose and I believe her. She immediately apologized, she said she didn’t hear the signal. As for what happened in the match…
The student shrugs her shoulders.
Arina:
That’s just how it goes. Some things are out of our control.
The principal sighs softly, glancing at the young girl standing in front of him.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
Right. Anyway, how did the party go? Anything to report?
Arina:
You’re not asking me to blow the whistle on my friends, are you?
As she says that, she pokes Gian on the chest. A liberty you don’t expect a student to take with their principal. Just like you don’t expect him to react with just a smile.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
Do you have any reason to?
Arina:
Of course not!
The young girl replies, flashing another smile.
Arina:
Everybody behaved, the food was exquisite, we chatted, we danced… And noody missed the curfew.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
Glad to hear that.
The principal nods, pleased to hear that the party went smoothly.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
What did I tell you?
He adds with a smirk, to which Arina reacts, with an exaggerated eye-roll.
Arina:
Yes, you were right. I had a lot of fun, it was silly of me to think that I wouldn’t. I haven’t had this much fun since…
She stops, lowering her glance that, up to that moment, had been fixed on Gian. The principal immediately pushes himself off the desk and takes a step forward, wrapping his arms around the student. His hand gently rubs her back, his eyes staring into space as he holds Arina in a soft embrace. They stay like that for almost half a minute in absolute silence, until Gianluigi breaks it.
Gianluigi Vaccaro:
Laura saved me some cake from yesterday’s party. Let’s get it before the midnight riders break in the kitchen, again…
Arina doesn’t move, not right away. She stays with her head leaning against the principal’s chest for a few moments, before nodding and breaking the embrace. She’s the first one to leave, Gian follows right behind. The scene fades to black as he turns off the light, the last thing we hear is the door closing.
And then there’s only silence.
